What to Wear on a Jeddah Desert Safari — and What to Bring
For a relaxed camp visit, start with breathable clothing you can move in, secure closed shoes and a layer to add later if the forecast calls for it. For quad biking, that casual outfit is not the whole answer: riding requires appropriate protective equipment.S09
The best packing question is simple: What will I actually be doing, and for how long?
A dinner at the camp and a vehicle-based activity should not have the same clothing checklist.
Choose your outfit by activity
| Your plan | Our starting suggestion | Check before leaving |
|---|---|---|
| Sitting, dining and a short walk | Comfortable trousers, a breathable top and secure closed shoes | Seating style, surfaces and the evening forecast |
| A passenger ride in a 4×4 | Clothing that allows comfortable sitting and proper use of the restraint | Operator’s clothing and participation instructions |
| Riding a quad bike | Long trousers and sleeves, over-the-ankle boots, helmet, suitable eye protection and gloves | What the provider supplies, correct fit and the vehicle’s requirements |
| Camel riding | Clothing that allows easy movement and secure footwear | The handler’s instructions for clothing and participation |
| An overnight stay | An additional layer, a change of clothes and personal overnight essentials | Bedding, bathroom facilities and temperature-control arrangements |

Ordinary camp clothing: keep it practical
For walking around and sitting with your group, choose clothes you can bend and sit comfortably in. Our suggestion is to leave delicate footwear and an outfit that needs constant adjusting for another occasion.
A practical combination is a breathable shirt or top, comfortable trousers, socks and secure shoes. A light extra layer gives you a choice later; select it according to the forecast rather than assuming that every desert night is cold.
For a visit to public places in Saudi Arabia, follow the official guidance on modest dress. This is separate from the equipment required for a particular activity.S10
Quad biking: do not substitute a casual outfit for riding gear
Before a ride, confirm the protective equipment with the provider and have its fit checked. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends a suitable helmet, eye protection, gloves, covered arms and legs, over-the-ankle boots and hands-on instruction.S08
A cap is not a helmet. Everyday trainers should not be assumed to meet the boot recommendation, and buying a scarf does not replace protective equipment. Ask the instructor to check clothing and accessories before the session, especially anything loose or trailing.
Do not book on the assumption that all gear will be waiting for you. Establish what is supplied, what you must bring and whether the equipment suits the intended rider.
Pack a small bag, not a second suitcase
Our suggested day-visit bag is deliberately simple: drinking water, your usual sun protection, a charged phone, a power bank, any personal essentials and a light layer where needed. Keep the booking confirmation and organiser’s contact details accessible.
For time in the sun, Saudi Ministry of Health advice includes shade, protective clothing, head covering, sunscreen, sunglasses and adequate fluids. Treat these as part of the plan, not a substitute for avoiding excessive exposure.S07
Bring a separate small bag for rubbish and leave the place as you found it. For photographs, protect your equipment between uses rather than placing it directly on the sand.
Coming with children?
Our practical suggestion is to bring a spare outfit, spare socks and the everyday items your child normally needs. Confirm food arrangements rather than assuming there will be a suitable snack or meal at every stage.
Ask the organiser about toilets, changing arrangements and where children can wait while others participate. Do not make a riding plan solely because a child has the right clothes; confirm the vehicle, participant requirements and instruction separately.
Staying overnight?
Read the accommodation details before deciding what to pack. Ask whether bedding, towels, toiletries, charging points and temperature control are supplied, and whether the bathroom is private or shared. Bring only what the confirmed facilities leave for you to provide.
A camp visit that continues late is not necessarily a stay with sleeping facilities. Hala Camp’s overnight offering is still being developed, and its final amenities and availability will be published once confirmed.
Leave room for the actual instructions
The final packing list should follow your booking, not a generic photograph of a desert holiday. Read the organiser’s message before departure and clarify anything that conflicts with the activity you plan to do.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wear sandals?
For a mixed visit involving walking and activities, we suggest secure closed footwear rather than planning around sandals. Quad biking needs its own protective footwear; Polaris recommends over-the-ankle boots and advises against sandals.S09
Do I need to buy special desert clothing?
For a simple camp visit, our recommendation is to start with suitable clothes you already own. Ask about specialist equipment only for the activities you book.
Can I wear a thobe or abaya?
For a seated visit, consider comfort and the venue’s guidance. For riding, discuss your clothing with the instructor before participating; your outfit must work with the activity and its protective equipment. Bring an alternative when advised.
Do I need a heavy jacket?
Choose the layer using the actual forecast, visit length and accommodation arrangements. Do not pack for a cold night simply because the destination is described as desert.
